The Client wanted to replace an existing cold and dark lean-to with a new well insulated extension to create a new dayroom that would connect to the garden along with an ancillary utility and wc.
The new extension provides a flexible living, dining and kitchen area for the family to enjoy with large sliding doors that allow daylight to spill into the space while also providing access to the garden.
With the monopitch form we were able to create a large internal volume within the new extension that was in proportion to the high ceilings of the existing dining room. We chose to expose the structure of the roof and add large rooflights to maximise the feeling of space and light.
The Client made changes to the landscaping therefore we chose to have long narrow windows to utilise a visual connection between the kitchen and the garden.

Our project near Portobello, Edinburgh was a full renovation and extension of a 1930s bungalow. The existing house featured two conservatories that were hardly used and an impractical floor plan. Our approach involved removing the existing conservatories and extension to create a cohesive, open-plan space.
The open plan area has a vaulted ceiling, with multiple rooflights to create a spacious and bright space. There is a fully glazed gable end to not only bring more light in but also creates a special connection with the garden. We incorporated bookcases within the walls to create a perfect space to look out to the garden and read a book.
The exterior features a combination of light brickwork and contrasting dark grey composite cladding to create a modern façade. The Danish brick size is lightly longer than a standard UK brick which balanced with the interrupting full height windows and vertical cladding.
